I love building things. I love the planning, drawing out a design, the gathering of materials, and finally, the execution of the plan to create the finished product! The act of making is almost sacred, in my life. I make and build lots of things this way, from scarves to chicken coops (see that photo of my great helpers?) to events and dinner. So it was really strange for me when, last year, when I was thinking of WellMama, I had this image in my head that was hard to pin down on paper. I had a plan, but it was really hard to go from conceptualizing to creation...until the very last month! I had all the bits and pieces right, but they came together only after I enlisted help-- that was the keystone for WellMama's success last year. I can't state that enough. Learning to ask for help was really hard for me. It was a lesson I learned and am learning it over again. Nothing will work without help, this year. I can rent a venue, and make pretty photos for marketing. I can print off flyers and hang them all over town- but the real clincher is the help from others who believe in the message of WellMama; that every family deserves the tools to get and stay healthy, from healthy pregnancies, to healthy births, to successful breastfeeding and beyond. I can't wait to see what great things will happen when this year's WellMama event comes together. My biggest job right now is recruiting volunteers and delegating work. It's no small feat, I'll tell you! Thursday ended up being pretty busy- I had three long home visits with mamas who definitely needed my help, and so Malia and I didn't get to the center to tour it in time. We chatted, though, and decided to book the venue anyhow. It's really a perfect space (I've seen it and rented it for other events, don't worry!) and we'll even have a kitchen for food vendors or other vendors' use. Pretty spiffy! I'm spending this week calling businesses I know that fit WellMama's dynamic. I can't wait to chat with some of these local business owners. Tonight I'm writing copy for marketing the event and putting finishing touches on the vendor registration packets. I'm really hopeful I can get them out to all the local businesses that would like them. I think we'll send them out digitally this year- printing everything last year took a lot of paper and gas...which sort of defeated the purpose of promoting healthy families and a healthy environment, I suppose. Things are totally beginning to come together. I feel so encouraged!

Well, hey there! I'm sitting here in my office in a chair I haven't left since 10AM...And that was just to get the mail! I'm an active lady, so that says a lot right there! I'm working hard to get this year's WellMama planned and put together. I'm so excited, because I'm thinking of how much fun we had last year and I cannot wait!
On Thursday, the current President of the Clark County Breastfeeding Coalition and I are touring potential sites for WellMama. I can't wait to take some photos and imagine all the cool things we can do with this year's festival... We even have some potential speakers lined up! -B |
